Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling
All Hamon Research-Cottrell pollution control technologies convey or treat a fluid media. To optimize both fluid flow characteristics and system pressure drop, Hamon Research-Cottrell maintains a core expertise in fluid dynamics as an integral part of its business and operates a computational fluid dynamics department to evaluate its products and systems.
Our mission is to provide technical support to the Hamon group and our customers through innovative product / device design recommendations as related to fluid flow. While the primary use is for in-house development, our CFD capabilities are available to outside clients as well for evaluation of equipment and process issues related to flow distribution, flow quality and pressure drop, especially with regard to air pollution control technology.
We have developed several types of flow control devices that are successfully operating throughout the industrialized world including Dust-Free flow straighteners, Arc-Plus turning vanes, Corrugate Perforate Plate, Vent-Flow stack anti-swirl vanes, Ungula injector/mixers, and compact seal air systems for Electrostatic Precipitators.
CFD modeling has improved productivity and realized several advantages:
- Productivity - Hamon Research-Cottrell runs seven “seats” in Phoenics 2008 which allows several projects to run simultaneously and allows quick response for any issues.
- Conceptual design - CFD models facilitate early design review and optimization. Preliminary results can be available for pre-contract development.
- Schedule - construction of the 3D virtual model requires only few days. Results from CFD calculations begin to guide design development very shortly thereafter and are normally completed and reported in the first 3 to 6 weeks of the project. This allows the engineering and procurement phases to advance and improves the overall project schedule.
- Level of detail - CFD modeling can look at both large scale flows as well as fine detail and can resolve design issues at the individual component level, as needed.
- Technical results - Certain fluid dynamics analysis are better handled by CFD. Most notably for Hamon Research-Cottrell technologies, CFD more accurately calculates non-isothermal systems and parallel resistance systems.
- Presentation and analysis – modeled results are available for pressure, flow, temperature, component mixture, streamline and other parameters in both numerical and graphical formats, providing powerful tools for quantifying and visualizing the flow behavior.
- Follow-up work - Completed CFD computer files are stored indefinitely and can be recovered and modified for additional analysis without difficulty.
Experienced analysts apply the CFD software to various parameters of air pollution control equipment to assess:
- Thermal Mixing
- Gas Species Concentration
- Jet Dispersion & Spray Evaporation
- Gas Flow Distribution
- Pressure Loss
